Caring for your silver

Sterling silver is one of the few things that improves the more you wear it. A little care keeps it bright for decades.

  • 01

    Last on, first off

Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and take it off before anything else at night.

  • 02

    Keep it dry

Remove silver to shower, swim, wash up and exercise. Chlorine and salt water are the worst offenders.

  • 03

    Wipe, then store

A few seconds with a soft cloth after wearing removes the oils and moisture that cause tarnish.

Why silver tarnishes

Tarnish is a thin dark layer that forms when silver reacts with sulphur in the air. It is not rust and it does not damage the metal. Humidity, sweat, perfume, rubber and some foods speed it up, which is why a ring left in a steamy bathroom darkens faster than one worn every day. The gentle friction of regular wear actually keeps silver clean.

Everyday cleaning

  1. Add a drop of mild dish soap to a bowl of lukewarm water.
  2. Soak the piece for two or three minutes.
  3. Clean gently with your fingers or a very soft toothbrush, paying attention to the back of settings and the links of chains.
  4. Rinse in clean water and dry completely with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Removing tarnish

For a piece that has darkened, use a silver polishing cloth. Rub in straight lines rather than circles, turn the cloth as it blackens, and stop when the shine is back. Do not wash the cloth; the polish is in the fabric.

Heavier tarnish can be lifted with a silver dip or a paste of baking soda and water, but use these sparingly and never on oxidised, plated, pearl or stone-set pieces.

Storing

  • Keep each piece in its pouch or box, away from air and from other jewellery.
  • Fasten chains before putting them away so they do not knot.
  • Store somewhere cool and dry, not the bathroom. A small silica gel sachet in the box helps during the monsoon.

Special finishes

Plated silver

Rhodium, gold and rose gold plating is a fine layer over sterling silver. Clean it only with soapy water and a soft cloth. Polishing cloths, dips and abrasives will wear the plating away.

Oxidised silver

The dark finish is deliberate. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and avoid polish and dips, which strip it back to bright silver.

Pearls

Pearls are soft and porous. Wipe them with a damp cloth after wearing, keep them away from perfume and never soak them.

Stones

Cubic zirconia and moissanite stay brilliant with soapy water and a soft brush. Check now and then that the stone sits firmly; if it moves, stop wearing the piece and let us look at it.

What to avoid

  • Bleach, chlorine and household cleaners.
  • Toothpaste, which is abrasive and scratches polished silver.
  • Tissue and paper towels, which leave fine scratches.
  • Sleeping in delicate chains, which stretches and kinks them.
